Hirata Bokubai (years of birth and death unknown) was a renga poet of the Muromachi Period, who trained under Asukai Masachika (1417-1487). He was also a skilled Asukai-style calligrapher and is known to have worked for Masachika as his private secretary. Bokubai’s skilled and elegant brushwork has the dignity of the classical style, and all of the exhibited tanzaku speak eloquently of the heights he had reached in the art. This is written on kumogami, the cloud-patterned paper most commonly used during the Muromachi era.
Bucks in the Dawn: A forlorn buck’s call for a doe -- my robe is soaked with tears, just as the green leaves are wet with dew.
