近衛信尋〈このえのぶひろ・1599-1649〉は、後陽成天皇〈ごようぜいてんのう・1571-1617〉の第４皇子で、母は中和門院前子〈ちゅうかもんいんさきこ・1575-1630〉。前子の兄近衛信尹〈このえのぶただ・1565-1614〉に嗣子がなかったため、慶長10年〈1605〉７歳のとき、勅命により養子となった。氏長者、従一位・関白に至る。正保２年〈1645〉出家、法名は応山（おうざん）。慶安２年〈1649〉没す。日記『本源自性院記（ほんげんじしょういんき）』を残す。古田織部〈ふるたおりべ・1544-1615〉について茶道を学ぶ。また、島原の遊里に通い関白（せきしろ）と呼ばれて吉野大夫〈よしのだゆう・1606?-1643?〉に執心、というような型破りの粋人としても知られる。彼の書は養父信尹に酷似する。強い筆力、大胆な運筆の気宇壮大な書は、近衛流の信奉者の域を越えて、まさにその真髄に追っている。この短冊は、五十賀の祝の歌会での詠。まさしく近衛流そのものを示す筆致である。歌題は別筆。
