『大般若経』巻第五〇一の断簡（１紙分）である。『大般若経』（大般若波羅蜜多経）は、「般若波羅蜜」（完成された最高の智慧の意）を説く多くの般若経典群の総称で、全600巻から成る。あらゆる仏典中で最大規模の経典で知られる。唐の玄奘の訳が流布する。『法華経』とおなじく写経の功徳を説く。さらに、この経典を供養するものは諸の神によって常に護られると説くことから、わが国においても、奈良時代以後、平安・鎌倉時代と、永きにわたって、しばしば書写されている。とくに平安時代には、紺紙金泥の『大般若経』が数多く書写された記録がある。また、１人でこの『大般若経』１部600完写の功徳を遂げた人もいた。この断簡ももとはこうした背景に１部600巻で書写供養されたものであったにちがいない。穏やかな行書体の写経は、平安時代12世紀の書風を思わせる。
