佐久良東雄〈さくらあずまお・1811-60〉は、幕末の志士・歌人。常陸国（茨城県）新治(にいはり)郡に、郷士飯島平蔵の長男として生れる。幼くして仏門に入り、25歳で新義真言宗の真鍋善応寺（まなべぜんのうじ）の住職となったが、33歳の時に還俗し、佐久良（桜）東雄と改名した。やがて、江戸に出て平田篤胤〈ひらたあつたね・1776-1843〉に入門する。水戸藩士と交わり、京に上って妙法院宮の家人となり、尊皇運動に身を投じた。万延元年〈1860〉桜田門外の変に加わった高橋多一郎父子を匿って捕えられ、江戸伝馬町の獄中で絶食し、50歳で没した。勤王報国を詠んだ和歌が多い。書においては上代様を学び、空海を思わせる力強い楷書、古筆や良寛〈りょうかん・1758-1831〉に通ずる仮名を書いた。とりわけ「高野切」（第二種）に傾倒し、その影響は図版の短冊にもよく表れている。
