持明院基規〈じみょういんもとのり・1492-1551〉は、基春〈もとはる・1453-1535〉の子。初名家親（いえちか）、のち基規と改名。天文18年〈1549〉、58歳で権中納言に至る。戦乱の世にあって、30代半ばより晩年まで、保身のために地方の武将に身を寄せた。能登国、ついで美濃国、最後の周防国の大内義隆〈おおうちよしたか・1507-51〉のもとでは、公卿文化を愛する義隆と意気投合し、親密な間柄となった。同20年８月、60歳で出家。法名宗栄（そうえい）。その直後、義隆は家臣陶晴賢〈すえはるかた・1521-55〉の反逆にあって滅び、基規も共に自刃して果てた。彼の書は、持明院流の祖である父基春の書風をそのまま受け継いでいる。この短冊の書写年代は詳らかではないが、幾分若書きのものと見て取れる。
