Nijo Tamechika (?-1341) was the first son of the Junior General of the Left, Tamemichi (1271-99) and was Tameyo (1250-1338)’s grandson. Among the Nijo family, which produced dozens of fine poets, Tamechika’s reputation was somewhat obscured by the popularity of his younger brother, Tamesada (1293-1360). Still, 15 of his poems were included in seven imperially commissioned anthologies, such as the Sequel to the Anthology of Japanese Poems of a Thousand Years (Jap: Shoku Senzai Wakashu), in addition to some other poems selected for private collections like the Sequal to the Collection of Contemporary Leaves(Jap: Shoku Genyo Wakashu).Written on undecorated paper, the exhibited poem is rendered in an ancient calligraphic style with a touch of free-spirited naturalness.
The Star Festival: The Cowherd Prince comes to visit once every year, but, alas, the night of the Star Festival is a fleeting moment.
