近衛信尹〈このえのぶただ・1565-1614〉は従一位・関白前久〈さきひさ・1536-1612〉の子。初名は信基（のぶもと）、天正10年〈1582〉に信輔（のぶすけ）、慶長４年〈1599〉に信尹と改名。号は三貌院（さんみゃくいん）。摂関家の嫡男として異例の昇進を重ね、21歳にして従一位・左大臣に至った。文禄元年〈1592〉豊臣秀吉の朝鮮出兵に従軍渡海を企てたが阻まれ、後陽成天皇の勅勘を蒙って薩摩に配流の身となる。３年間坊津（ぼうのつ）に留まったのち、赦されて慶長元年〈1596〉に帰洛。同４年に信尹と改名し、その後、関白・氏長者、さらには准三宮となった。歌道・書道に秀で、ことに書は近衛流（三藐院流）と称され、多くの追随者を輩出した。本阿弥光悦〈ほんあみこうえつ・1558-1637〉、松花堂昭乗〈しょうかどうしょうじょう・1582-1639〉らとともに「寛永の三筆」の一人に挙げられる。この短冊は、藍の型文様で渦巻などを刷りだした上に、金銀泥で草花の下絵を描いた華麗な装飾料紙を用いる。
