Reizei Tamehiro (1450-1526) was the son of Tametomi. When the father died in 1497, Tamehiro took over leadership of the Kami-Reizei family and came to play a central role in the literary world, filling the void left by the death of prominent figures such as Asukai Masachika. When Tamehiro was 53 (1502), he was recognized by imperial authority as Grand Master in the art of waka, upon recommendations by the 11th shogun, Ashikaga Yoshizumi (of the Muromachi military government). Although he was promoted to Provisional Major Counselor at age 59 (1508), he resigned in the same year to become a monk and adopted the name “Sosei.”. He left behind a number of private anthologies such as Poems by Tamehiro and the Collection of Lord Tamehiro’s Poems (The latter anthology is sometimes called the Seigyoku Shu, lit. “Collection of Clear Gems”), which contains renga composed alternately by the 9th shogun, Ashikaga Yoshihisa. In calligraphic style, Tamehiro stands out in the Reizei family in his abandonment of the Teika School in favor of the Jiraku School, established by Asukai Masayasu (1436-1509), and his work is further characterized by his unique placement of the brush at the starting point of each piece. This poem title “Summer’s Morning” were written by a different hand.
Summer’s Morning: I step out, unable to wait for dawn, and find the moon still in the sky -- the second night in a row.
