近衛前久〈このえさきひさ・1536-1612〉は、関白・太政大臣稙家〈たねいえ・1503-66〉の子。「寛永の三筆」の一人である信尹〈のぶただ・1565-1614〉の父。将軍足利義晴〈あしかがよしはる・1511-50〉から一字をもらい、初名を晴嗣（はるつぐ）としたが、やがて前嗣（さきつぐ）、前久と改めた。摂関家の嫡男として、19歳で関白・氏長者、20歳で従一位、さらに天正10年には太政大臣に至った。しかし、三ヶ月ほどでその職を辞し、同年６月、本能寺の変を契機に出家、法号を龍山と号した。後年は足利義昭〈あしかがよしあき・1537-97〉・豊臣秀吉〈とよとみひでよし・〉らとの不和がもとで地方を遍歴、流浪の日々を送った。前久は学問や有職故実に通じた当代一流の文化人であったため、父より受けた古今伝授を寄寓先の薩摩の島津義久らに授けるなど、地方文化の高揚に貢献した。書は、尊円流（青蓮院流）の名手で、松花堂昭乗〈しょうかどうしょうじょう・1584-1639〉の師といわれている。この短冊は「龍山」の署名により、出家後47歳以降のものとわかる。
