Priest Sonno (?-1514) was the second son of Regent Nijo Mochimoto (1390-1445) and was the 22nd imperial head of Shoren-In Temple. After he served as prelate of Tendaiji Temple and administrator at Tennoji Temple, he was honored with the title “Jugo,” (original literal meaning: Empress Equivalent), which was reserved for court nobles, military administrators, or priests who made noteworthy achievements. As Priest Sonno also served as prelate of Juraku-In Temple, he was also called “The Later Prelate of Juraku-In.” Sonno took after his father, a court noble, as a highly achieved aristocratic calligrapher. Just like his predecessors at Shoren-In, Sonno was an ardent follower of Prince Sonen’s style and was hailed as one of the best calligraphers of the princely priests who resided at the temple. In the genealogy of calligraphy, Priest Sonno is listed under a school of his own, the Sonno School, as a spin-off of the Shoren-In School (also called the Sonen School.)The exhibited tanzaku clearly show the Sonen School features. This also exhibit some peculiarities of poetry etiquette and play. For example, at the upper right-hand corner of the poem, one can decipher the hiragana character for “ra.” This was one of a handful of playful literary challenges used at poetry parties; the poet, given the title, was also asked to begin his poem with this syllable.
Mountain Moon: The white robes of the courtesans busily crossing the corridor. They seem anxious waiting for the autumn moon to rise from the mountain's edge.
