The Annotated Lankavatara Sutra(Jp. Chu-Lyogakyo, or “Annotated Lyogakyo,” with “Lyoga” meaning Lanka, or Sri Lanka, and “kyo” meaning “sutra”) was originally translated by the Tang Dynasty priest Shikshananda (Jp. Jissha Nanda), and latter annotated by Priest Chih-yen (Jp. Chigon; 602-68), also of Tang era China. In the Lankavatara Sutra, Buddha delivers his wisdom to Amitabha at a place called Sri Lanka, hence the name of the scripture. The larger characters are the original translation by Shikshananda, and Chigon’s notations are shown by the smaller characters written in two lines. The Lankavatara Sutra manuscript scrolls had been preserved at Shingon-In of Todaiji Temple for many centuries, but some volumes were taken out of the temple during the Middle Ages of Japan (Jp. Kinsei; 15c.) and eventually bought and kept by several families. Out of the manuscripts lost from this great temple and currently owned by Daitokyu Memorial Library, is one copy of Volume 7 that is clearly marked “First of May, 12th Year of Tempyo”. Therefore, one can assume that the segment of Volume 6 exhibited here is perhaps one of Empress Komyo’s dedicated copies, namely the “Issaikyo Sutra Manuscripts Made at the Votive Wish of Empress Komyo”. The dignified look of the manuscript is due to the heavy and steady brushstrokes of mixed larger and smaller characters, most likely rendered by achieved sutra calligraphers of the Nara Period. Being a typical Tempyo Era sutra manuscript, this segment is one of the most memorable of extant copies from the Nara Dynasty.
