冷泉為章〈れいぜいためあきら・1751-1822〉は、為泰〈ためやす・1735-1816〉の子。寛政元年〈1789〉権中納言、文化４年〈1807〉には権大納言に昇進した。冷泉家は、藤原定家（ふじわらのさだいえ）の孫であり、阿仏尼（あぶつに）を母とする為相〈ためすけ・1263-1328〉が初祖。４代目のとき、上（かみ）・下（しも）冷泉家に分かれた。為章は上冷泉家の嫡流。その書は、典型的な定家流である。定家相伝の歌書の書写を繰り返すうち、定家への尊崇の念ともあいまって、やや誇張された定家流が身についたものと思われる。
