The Edo Era haiku poet Kobayashi Issa (1763-1827) was from Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture). His original name was Nobuyuki, but he later adopted “Issa” as his artistic pseudonym. While still a toddler (3 years of age), Nobuyuki’s mother died, and he was taken in and raised by his grandmother for a time. At age 15, he left home for Edo, leaving a strained relationship with his stepmother, and came to study haikai, the literary predecessor of haiku, under Jirokuan Chiku and, later, under Mizoguchi Soga. Starting in 1792, Issa journeyed through parts of Japan, including Shikoku, Kyushu, Hokuriku, and Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture), constantly writing haiku on his trips. In old age, he returned to his homeland.Issa’s haiku are characterized by their humanistic sentiments. His most representative published collection is Ora-ga-Haru (lit. My Spring), but he left behind a profuse number of haiku poems, many of them illustrated by the poet himself. The haiku on the exhibited tanzaku is written with a scant amount of ink, resulting in austere simplicity, speaking of the unaffected manner and personality of this haiku master. The poem is a quote from Number Seven Journal (Jp. Shichiban Nikki), Issa’s diary spanning the ten years from New Year’s Day 1810 to December 1818 and containing many of his haiku compositions. The dry humor of the poem seems appropriate for this unique poet’s personality.
