His original name was Nobuyuki, but he later adopted \u201cIssa\u201d as his artistic pseudonym. While still a toddler (3 years of age), Nobuyuki\u2019s mother died, and he was taken in and raised by his grandmother for a time. At age 15, he left home for Edo, leaving a strained relationship with his stepmother, and came to study haikai, the literary predecessor of haiku, under Jirokuan Chiku and, later, under Mizoguchi Soga. Starting in 1792, Issa journeyed through parts of Japan, including Shikoku, Kyushu, Hokuriku, and Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture), constantly writing haiku on his trips. In old age, he returned to his homeland.Issa\u2019s haiku are characterized by their humanistic sentiments. His most representative published collection is Ora-ga-Haru (lit.
