Ryojun (1630-69), was the eighth son of Emperor Goyozei, born to his consort Tomoko, who was the daughter of Provisional Major Counselor Niwata Shigetomo. As such, the prince was the half-brother of both Emperor Gomizunoo and Regent Konoe Nobuhiro. At age 5, he was sent to Chion-In Temple, and was permitted to use the title of \u201cprince\u201d at age 12; whereupon, he was given the name Naosuke. In due course, he was adopted by General Tokugawa Ieyasu, but went on to complete Buddhist training in 1619 at age 17 and receive the Buddhist name Ryojun. Ryojun did not fit the character traits of any princely priests. He was fond of drinking, womanizing (sometimes even visiting brothels) and freely associating with commoners. In 1643, the emperor, in great ire, decided to exile Ryojun to Tenmokuzan Mountain in Kai Province (today\u2019s Yamanashi Prefecture). He was pardoned 16 years later but was not allowed to return to Chion-In, so he lived at Shin-Zenkoji Temple in the Sennyuji Temple precinct in Kyoto. Finally, he moved to Kitano in 1664, returned to the lay world and began to call himself by the pseudonym of \u201cIshin-An Shigemasa\u201d.   Ryojun wrote this letter to Kanamori Sowa (1584-1656), a close friend through chanoyu. It seems that Ryojun had asked to have his tea kettle repaired as he notes he just received the repaired kettle, delivered by a Hattori, and is quite satisfied with the result. Ryojun goes on to say that he is going to send 30 pieces of dried persimmon.
