Soho (1573-1645) was a Rinzai Sect Zen priest who hailed from Izushi, Tajima Province (today\u2019s Hyogo Prefecture). He took the tonsure in his hometown and later went to train under Bishop Shunoku Soen (1529-1611) of Daitokuji Temple. He then became a disciple of Itto shoteki (1539-1612) and succeeded him to become the 153rd bishop of Daitokuji. In 1627, Takuan Soho became entangled in a political conflict between the imperial and military rulers concerning Emperor Gomizuno-o\u2019s edict on the honorable purple robe. Consequently, Soho was exiled to Kaminoyama in Dewa Province (today\u2019s Yamagata Prefecture) in northern Japan. He was pardoned later and allowed to return to Edo (today\u2019s Tokyo). Thereafter, the third Shogun (Generalissimo) of the military government, Tokugawa Iemitsu, became a devoted Buddhist and established Tokaiji Temple in Shinagawa, Edo. Soho died at age 73 in 1645. Confidant of Emperor Gomizuno-o (1596-1680) and Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-51), the Reverend Soho was also a man of elegant taste, thoroughly trained in haiku composition and sado (chado) tea ceremony.  In this letter, Soho writes that he and Gyokushitsu Sohaku (1572-1641) looked at a painting by Kanzan (lit. \u201ccold mountain\u201d; a favorite eccentric in Chinese painting: Ch. Hanshan) to identify the author of the accompanying poem. He comments that due to the lack of seal and signature, they were unable to identify the writer.
