Nagamori (1545-1615) was a warlord during the Sengoku Period (lit. \u201cAge of Country at War\u201d). He was a vassal to Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi and helped his master to the feat of unifying Japan. Winning deep trust from Hideyoshi, he was involved in almost all aspects of Hideyoshi\u2019s administration, together with four other main figures, who were Maeda Genyi, Asano Nagamasa, Ishida Mitsunari, and Natsuka Masaiye. Together, they were called the \u201cFive Administrators\u201d of the Toyotomi clan. Today, Nagamori\u2019s name appears in kenchicho (cadastral registers) and other administrative documents, attesting to his abilities. After Hideyoshi\u2019s death, Nagamori shared the rapidly declining fortune of the Toyotomi family. His estate was confiscated after the Battle of Sekigahara; he was exiled and later ordered to commit suicide after the fall of Osaka Castle in 1615, because his son Moritsugu had joined the defeated Toyotomi side. (The victorious Tokugawa Ieyasu emerged to build his own Shogunate, the Edo military government.) Addressed to Sakuma Shingoro, this letter is difficult to decipher. Nagamori is pleased that Shingoro and his relatives were given new estates as well as administrative posts commensurate with the roles they played. It sounds like Shingoro had asked for Nagamori\u2019s kind words to obtain the rewards he wanted. The letter mentions that Takada Shozaemon was the messenger. He was Nagamori\u2019s man. During the Battle of Sekigahara, Nagamori confined himself at the Osaka Castle together with General Ishida Mitsunari. However, Nagamori secretly sent a messenger(Takada Shozaemon) to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
