Shigeyuki (1434-1511) was son of Hosokawa Norisuke, the provincial governor of Sanuki (today\u2019s Kagawa Prefecture). Shigeyuki was adopted by his uncle Mochitsune and became the governor of Awa (today\u2019s Tokushima) and Mikawa (today\u2019s east Aichi) countries. Later, he jointly held provincial governorship of Sanuki country and handed over the administration of Mikawa to Isshiki Yoshinao. He was a cultured man trained in waka (a 31-syllable poem) and was talented in painting, the inu-oumono dog-chase and hunts (warriors on horseback shooting padded arrows at a running dog), kemari football of ancient Japan, and sarugaku (mimic plays). It was through poetry composition that Shigeyuki developed a friendship with the Zen monk, Osen Keisan (1429-93). In 1478, the 45-year-old Shigeyuki entered Buddhist training and was given the Buddhist name of Doku. He handed down the family headship to his heir Masayuki (1455-88) and traveled widely across Japan. Masayuki became Vice Director of War and then was appointed governor of Sanuki, but he died young in 1488.Not many details can be made out of this letter, but it discusses the temple and shrine estate and tells the recipient that he will send Vice Director of War, in other words, his own son Masayuki for details. It then goes on to give thanks for the gift of sake and more. The letter is signed Doku, so it was obviously written after Shigeyuki entered priesthood, maybe when he was around 50.
