noble man of the mid-Edo Period, Konoe Motohiro (1648-1722) was a true blue blood. His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, and his mother was Princess Akiko, the daughter of reigning Emperor Gomizunoo. After successively assuming the highest administrative posts, i.e., Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Right and Minister of the Left, Motohiro was promoted to Regent in 1690 and then reached the highest court post of Chancellor in 1709. Thoroughly trained across all fields of art and literature, Lord Motohiro was particularly famous for his classical Jodaiyo style of calligraphy, patterned after the masterpieces of the Heian Period, and is considered a pioneer in reviving the ancient indigenous form.The addressee of this letter, though not known, seemed to have been very busy hand-copying the \u201cdiaries\u201d passed down in the Konoe family. Obviously, the addressee was borrowing these records\/journals and then copying them at an amazing speed. For example, Motohiro mentions that the addressee borrowed eight diaries the day before, and he is going to lend him another ten today. Motohiro is slightly apologetic for the delay in attending to the matter because he had come home late, after accompanying Retired Emperor Gomizunoo on a visit to the Shugakuin Rikyu (Detached Palace). (The retired emperor became a monk in May 1651 and died in August 1680, when Motohiro was 33.)
