Ryoshun (1326-?) was a warrior and poet of the Nanbokucho Period (Period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties). His secular name was Sadayo, but he became a monk after Ashikaga Yoshiakira (1330-67)&rsquo;s demise in 1367, and thereafter used the Buddhist name of Ryoshun. In 1370, he was appointed to head the deputy military government (Tandai) in Kyushu and served the Ashikaga clan well as an able warrior for the next 25 years. Later, he went down to today&rsquo;s Shizuoka as the governor of Totomi but went back to Kyoto after the Oei-no-Ran (Oei Rebellion). He retired from politics completely thereafter, dedicating the rest of his life to waka and renga poetry composition. He studied waka under Reizei Tamehide (?-1372), and renga, under Nijo Yoshimoto (1320-88) and led the life of literary pursuit, reading and writing extensively. He left behind many treatises on waka and renga and the Imagawajo (a textbook on ethics), which was a favorite textbook used by many terakoya temple schools all through the Edo Period.In the letter, Ryoshun thanks Genko-in (unidentified) for sending him white lotus flowers, which brought him consolation. He had been asked to lend a transcription of the Heian Period history book of Ohkagami and replies that he is happy to lend the book.
