Uraku (1547-1621) was a military general, not to mention an avid tea connoisseur, who lived from the late Momoyama Period to the early Edo Period. The 11th son of Oda Nobuhide (1510-51) and a younger brother to Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), Uraku was born Nagamasu, but he later took the tonsure and started going by the names Uraku, Urakusai and Joan. After the Revolt of the Honnoji (in which his elder brother Generalissimo Oda Nobunaga was assassinated), Uraku became Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98)\u2019s vassal and was endowed with a 2,000-goku fief in Mashita, Settsu Province. Then, during the Battle of Sekigahara, Uraku decided to side with and serve the Tokugawa forces, for which he was rewarded with a 30,000-goku fief in Yamabe Country, Yamato (today\u2019s Nara Pref.). Thereafter, he went into a self-imposed exile in the Higashiyama Mountains by giving the majority of his estate to his children and leisurely living off the remaining property. He trained under the tea master Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-91) and established a new school, known as the Uraku School of tea ceremony. Yurakucho, one of Tokyo\u2019s busy downtown areas, was named after Uraku, as he had a mansion outside the Sukiyabashi Bridge, a reward from Tokugawa Ieyasu.  The people mentioned in this letter are not known, but the letter itself is an invitation to afternoon tea in December, addressed, perhaps, to a Buddhist priest among Uraku\u2019s tea friends.
