Ryutatsu (1527-1611) was born into a family running a business in herbal medicine. Quite adept in calligraphy, he was hailed in the commercial city of Sakai as one of the best hands at brush-ink writing, the other two being Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-91) and Sorori Shinzaemon. Ryutatsu was also an excellent singer of kouta (songs of simple verse originating among commoners that spread to the upper class), and his singing style was called Ryutatsu-Bushi, meaning Ryutatsu-style music. While continuing the family business of dealing in medicine, he was often invited to the grandiose mansions of high-ranking officers, warriors, etc. to sing kouta in his brilliant voice. He also wrote down the words of many of his kouta. On the noh stage built at Fushimi Castle, Ryutatsu sang kouta accompanied on drums by Hosokawa Yusai (1534-1610) and was hailed by the audience, which included Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98). Ryutatsu\u2019s calligraphic training was in the Sakai School, propagated by Botanka Shohaku (1443-1527). He died at age 85.Unfortunately, the addressee is missing in this letter, but from the content, we can determine it is a thank-you note to the host of a tea party. Ryutatsu frankly states that he was very happy and impressed to see the famous tea utensils.
