Rinzai sect Zen priest, Seigan Soyi, was affiliated with the Daitokuji Temple and used the pseudonyms Jishoshi and Koroshi. Originally from Ohmi (Shiga Prefecture), he studied under Gyokuho Shoso (1546-1613) and later, Kenkoku Soryo (1557-1621). Under imperial order from Emperor Gomizuno-o (1596-1680), he was promoted to the 170th bishop of the Daitokuji in 1625 and resided at Koto-In in the precinct. Then he lived in Nanshuji Temple and founded the smaller structures of Tokusen-An and Rinko-An and was also instrumental in founding various temples across Japan. In 1649, he became bishop of Tokaiji Temple in Edo (today\u2019s Tokyo) after the demise of Takuan Soho (1573-1645) by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu(1604-51)\u2019s command. In 1661, Seigan Soi was posthumously named Sijo-Honnen-Zenji by Emperor Gosai (1637-85). Seigan Soyi had a reputation as an accomplished calligrapher and painter who had studied the styles of Zhang Jizhi (1186-1266) and Xutang Zhiyu (1185-1269) of Southern Song China. The calligraphed number one does not signify the numeral; rather, it is symbolizes that each and every existence comes and returns to the absolute law. This principle is frequently cited in literature, e.g., the Record of Zhaozhou (\u201call things return to one\u201d) , the Blue Cliff Record (Ch. Biyan Lu; Jp. Hekigan-Roku; \u201cone includes many forms\u201d), and Laozi (\u201ceverything emanates from one\u201d). Therefore, one is the origin of all things in the universe and signifies universal life.
