The inscription on this mirror derives from an ancient Chinese anecdote. “Ryumon” (lit. “Dragon Gate”) is the site of rapids upstream from the Hwang Ho (Yellow River) in China. As carp swim upstream to lay eggs, goes the legend, only the fish that successfully jumps the Dragon Gate will turn into a dragon. Later, the Dragon Gate became synonymous with “overcoming obstacles to achieve success,” and later the expression appeared in Japan.
