in fishing, nets were a part of life in ancient Japan, and scenes of fishnets being dried under the sun frequently appeared in poems. Later during the Edo Period, the fishnet was stylized into a decorative motif. A model example of this motif, now preserved by the Imperial Household, appears in &ldquo;Drying Fishnets&rdquo;, a painting rendered by Kaiho Yusho (1533-1615) on a byobu (a folding screen used as a room partition).
