bird-and-butterfly motif began to be frequently used in artworks during the Heian Period, perhaps due to the influence of the era\u2019s literary masterpieces. The Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), for example, has a chapter titled sets of four young girls clad in bird and butterfly costumes perform a dance. The depiction is evidence that the flight of birds and butterflies fascinated people of the period, and that these creatures were considered refined. With time, the brilliantly colored swallowtail butterfly parted with the bird design to develop into an independent pattern, becoming one of the most favored during the Edo Period.
