segment must have been named after Fujii Jochi (years of birth and death unknown) who owned it. Jochi was a disciple of Kohitsu Ryosa (1572-1662), the famous calligraphy connoisseur and appreciator of the early Edo Period. The fragment shows poems calligraphed from the Wakan Roeisyu (Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation , Spring: &lsquo;plum blossoms&rsquo;, and &lsquo;pink plum blossoms&rsquo; in Volume 1), and it originally belonged to a two-volume handscroll. The powerful and somewhat unsettled appearance shows the typical style of the Gokyogoku School which attained extraordinary popularity during the Kamakura Period. This style is similar to the style seen in the writings in the Satake Version of The Thirty-Six Immortal Poets and to the text of the Illustrated Version of Murasaki Shikibu (Lady Murasaki) Diary, which are known to be authentic works produced by Gokyogoku Yoshitsune (1169-1206). This segment, believed to have been rendered in the mid-13th century, is a valuable masterpiece.Mica dust is applied on thick and strong paper and the lines are made with gold mud, while the top and bottom spaces are decorated with gold and silver foils, stripes and dust. The back of the scroll is also lavishly decorated with small silver foils, thus resulting in an extraordinarily luxurious edition.
