bodhisattva Monju (Manjusri) represents the wisdom of all buddhas. Monju is seated at the left hand of sakyamuni in triads with the bodhisattva Fugen (Samantabhadra), who sits at the right hand of sakya. He is often depicted seated on a lion, the king of the animals, with a sword in his right hand, although besides the triads, Monju is also often found in images on his own. Chigo were page boys in the service of priests at Buddhist temples, and the objects of deep affection, they in fact held high status. The large priest population over securing the most beautiful chigo page boys for their service. Eventually, the ideal type came to be conceived as a manifestation of the bodhisattva Monju, and thus emerged the image of so-called Chigo Monju. Several paintings of these Chigo Monju done in Japan from Kamakura period are still extant. This painting is one of the more finished examples.
