wisdom that spans the entire universe, the Kokuzo Bodhisattva (Jp. Kokuzo Bosatsu; Sk. Akasagarbha or Khagarbha) was worshipped for fulfilling the believers\u2019 wishes. As part of esoteric rites, Kokuzo was the symbol of limitless wisdom and compassion and was the central deity for enhancing one\u2019s memory. As such, many portraits and sculptures were produced throughout the middle ages.The exhibit shows an image believed to be particularly helpful in memory enhancement. Contemplate the main feature\u2014the white lotus flower in the left hand. Illuminated by the double halo and enlightening rays emitted in all four directions, the central focus is in the image itself, although the lotus pedestal was left unpainted.
