Tadakatsu (1548-1610) was a military general active from the Warring (Sengoku) Period through the Edo Period. Born as the son of Honda Tadataka (?-1549), a vassal of Matsudaira Hirotada (1526-1549), the feudal lord of Okazaki Castle, Tadakatsu usually went by his common name of Heihachiro.As a young man, Tadakatsu served General Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) well in many battles and made a name for himself. When the new military administration was formed under Tokugawa Clan leadership, Tadakatsu became one of the four highest-ranking generals, along with generals Sakai Tadatsugu (1527-1596), Sakakibara Yasumasa (1548-1606) and Iyi Naomasa (1561-1602). He contributed greatly to laying down the foundationof the new government. He died at age 63 in Kuwana in 1610.This hanging scroll has just one huge character denoting &ldquo;politics&rdquo; or &ldquo;administration&rdquo; and is only signed &ldquo;Heihachi.&rdquo; Since Tadakatsu, his father, Tadataka, and son, Tadamasa (1575-1631), all used the name &ldquo;Heihachiro&rdquo; at one time or another, the calligrapher is not easy to identify. This piece, however, has been handed down in a pouch also containing a letter showing Tadakatsu&rsquo;s official post. As such, it has traditionally been considered the authentic work of this extraordinary military general. The large letter is written on karakami (originally meaning &ldquo;Chinese paper&rdquo;) crafted in Japan and decorated with flowers and grass motifs made by rubbing templates with mica. Perhaps Tadakatsu tried to express the importance of &ldquo;administering the nation&rdquo; or &ldquo;ruling the population,&rdquo; which this letter denotes. Contemplate the extreme care taken in writing every line and stroke.
