Chikage (1735-1808) was a scholar of kokugaku (lit. national learning; Japanology) and a waka poet who lived toward the end of the Edo Period. Born as the third son of Kato Enao (1692-1785), a disciple of famous Japanologist Kamono Mabuchi (1697-1769), Chikage’s real surname was Tachibana, which he used from time to time. He succeeded to his father’s official post of Edo City Assistant Magistrate and served at this post until his retirement in 1788. He was educated by his father since infancy and, from the age of 10 on, at Kamono Mabuchi’s school and grew up to become one of Mabuchi’s most distinguished disciples. Chikage established a reputation as a versatile calligrapher, training on his own by emulating the Shokado and Jodai (classical) styles. Later he established a unique style of his own, the Chikage School, which attracted many followers. This exhibited poem, perhaps of Chikage’s own making, written in typical Chikage-style brushstrokes.

貴賤迎春千蔭万代のはたてなびかすあさかぜに よもの民草はるをしるらむ

The Noble and the Ordinary Welcoming the Spring: Across the ages, the morning breeze furling the banners is the sign of spring.

{"2.1":"https://api-iiif.db.kemco.keio.ac.jp/iiif/object/1372/2.1/manifest.json","3.0":"https://api-iiif.db.kemco.keio.ac.jp/iiif/object/1372/3.0/manifest.json
