Shikai (1635?-1688) was a Buddhist priest but served at the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine. Although not much is known about his origin, Shinkai is known to have trained under Reverend Hozobo Kojo and to have succeeded his master as the shrine priest. He was well-known as a kyoka (comical or satirical poem) writer and was known to have been invited to recite his works in the audience of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. He left behind a poetry collection Kyoka Hato-no-Tsue Shu (Collection of Comical Poems by the Pigeon Staff.) (Note: A walking stick with a pigeon decorating its top was often made a longevity gift as pigeons don\u2019t choke on their food.) Skilled in both India ink-and-brush calligraphy and painting, he admired Shokado Sojo (1584-1639), another priest of the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine, whose Shokado School (also called Takimoto School) style he adopted.On the shown scroll, Shinkai wrote ten chinese poems and nine waka (Japanese poems) he selected from the two-volume Wakan Roeishu (Anthology of Japanese Chinese Poems for Recitation).
