Iehiro (1667-1736), a noble who lived toward the middle of the Edo Period, was born to the Regent Konoe Motohiro (1648-1722) and Imperial Princess Tsuneko , the daughter of Emperor GoMizuno-o (1596-1680). His career advanced rapidly to Regent, then Senior Regent, and finally reached the highest bureaucratic post of Prime Minister at age 44. Iehiro retired into Buddhism at age 59 and adopted the religious name Shinkaku and an artistic pen name, Yoraku-In. The Konoe family are descendants of the ancient Fujiwaras and the head of the five families that conventionally held regent and senior regent posts. In calligraphy, the Konoe family originated the Konoe School, also called the Sanmyaku-In School, and produced generations of outstanding calligraphers, including Konoe Nobutada (1565-1614), widely respected as one of the \u201cThree Brushes of the Kanei Era,\u201d Nobuhiro (1599-1649), Hisatsugu (1622-1653) and Motohiro. Under his father Motohiro\u2019s influence, Iehiro was attracted to classical masterpieces of the Heian Period and devoted himself to the collection and trace-copy reproduction of purely Japanese-style brushworks of the ancient court. Despite the popularity of brushwork styles with Chinese influence as well as the Oie School (alias Shoren-In School or Son-en School), Iehiro practiced the classical Japanese style, teaching himself with the treasures that had accumulated in the Konoe household. He contributed to the revival of the ancient style and was respected as the originator of the Yoraku-In School.This is the large single character meaning \u201cPerseverance\u201d written on silk. This handscroll has an attached certification by Sengoku Ichigaku, a vassal in the Konoe household.
