exhibited shakyo is a copy of the Volume 2 of the two-volume Ninnokyo (Benevolent King) Sutra, which describes the following teaching to 16 kings: Revere the Heart Sutra by holding it high and chanting its text to invoke heavenly protection over the king and his kingdom. During the Tempyo Era (8th c.) this teaching was followed closely in the form of lecture and chanting sessions held in the innermost quarters of the imperial palace. These sessions were called \u201cNinno-Kai\u201d, as the Ninnokyo Sutra was held in utmost reverence. The Tendai Sect also regarded the Ninnokyo Sutra highly, designating it  one of the \u201cThree Sacred Guardians of the Nation\u201d, along with two other sutras, namely, the Lotus Sutra and Golden Light Sutra (Jp. Konkomyo-Kyo). Naturally, the Ninnokyo Sutra was copied vigorously; as such, the exhibited segment was borne out of deep religious faith. This manuscript is attributed to Fujiwara-no-Yukinari (972-1027), also pronounced \u201cKozei.\u201d He was one of the Three Master Calligraphers of the mid-Heian Period. The brushwork amply displays the rich and elegant style of the aristocratic Heian era. It is a work of a consummated artist, exhibiting the height of Japanese aesthetic achievement. The segment actually appears on the first page of the ten-volume Sesonji Hosho (1794-96), which was a reproduction of generations of calligraphic masterpieces of the Sesonji School.
