Attracted to the Buddhist discipline at a young age, he became secretary at Tofukuji Temple in 1414, thereupon, taking the name Tetsu Shoki, or Scribe Tetsu. When about 15, he began to study poetry composition under Reizei Tametada (1361-1417) and Imagawa Ryoshun (1326-?). Soon he was not satisfied with the popular Reizei, Nijo, and Asukata poetry styles of the era and began to advocate the revival of ancient styles as represented by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie and soon established his own aesthetic, transcending other schools and styles.Priest Shotetsu\u2019s brushwork is calm and prudent and, in calligraphic history, represents an entirely new style, the Tetsu Schoki School (Scribe Tetsu School), an offshoot of the Imperial Writing School (originated by Emperor GoEnyu, 1358-93, of the Northern Dynasty). This poem is included in the Grassroots Collection (Jap: Sokon Shu), a collection of poems by Priest Shotetsu.
