Masachika (1417-90) was the first son of Provisional Middle Counselor Masayo. Since the time of their remote ancestor, Asukai Masatsune (1170-1221), who excelled in both poetry composition and football (kemari), the Asukais were engaged in the family profession of teaching both the literary art and the sport. Trained by his father, Masachika soon rose to prominence as a poetry and football instructor for a great many noblemen, local governors, and others. In 1466, his career was advanced to Provisional Major Counselor, but he became a monk in 1473 and adopted the Buddhist name of Eiga. He left behind many books, including the Major Counselor Masachika\u2019s Collection (Jap: Akai Shu), a private collection of poems. Also an accomplished calligrapher, Masachika is known to have originated the Asukai School (also called the Eiga School). Patterned after the classical style, Masachika\u2019s refined brushwork attracted students from all walks of life \u2013 aristocracy, the military class, Buddhist priests, renga poets, and the like \u2013 contributing greatly to the development of the art of calligraphy. The last four exhibited tanzaku are signed \u201cEiga\u201d and must have been written between the poet\u2019s ages of 57 and 74, when Masachika was a monk. The powerful flow of his brush speaks amply of his skills as one of the best calligraphers of the time.
