Sangoku Hikkaido (years of birth and death unknown) was a calligrapher with an active career during the mid-17th c. and the author of the 20-volume Complete Works of Sangoku Hikkaido, describing the famous living quarters of Zen Buddhists from Japan and China. This book became a handy textbook for calligraphy students. According to the Essays by Sanei written by Mochizuki Sanei (1698-1769), Sangoku was a vassal serving the household of Tokugawa Mitsukuni (1628-1700) of Mito (Ibaraki Prefecture).This exhibit is a scroll of specially commissioned brushwork alternating five Japanese and five Chinese poems. The latter includes two seven-syllable verses, one seven-syllable quatrain and one regulated seven-syllable verse, etc., shown with the respective poets’ names. Out of the five Japanese waka poems cited here, the one written in two lines shows the usual way waka was written on tanzaku (narrow strip) paper. The remaining poems are scattered across the square shikishi paper, showing a common style of writing. Because these different writing styles are shown, this handscroll was obviously created as a calligraphy textbook. Most of these poems were cited from the Wakan Roeishu (Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation) and Shinsen Roeishu (lit. Newly Selected Poems for Recitation), but the origin of the two Chinese poems are unidentified, perhaps because they were so well known among the contemporary people that they did not require annotation. The handscroll is a good example of Hikkaido’s unique style of writing.
