Myoe (1173-1232) was a high-ranking priest of Kegon Sect Buddhism during the Kamakura Period. His secular name was Koben, while Myoe was a Buddhist name given after his ordination. He contributed greatly to the revitalization of an older sect of Buddhism advocating active involvement in mastering Buddha\u2019s teachings, instead of resorting to the chanting fad that was quite popular those days due to general fears for the final days of this world. He was instrumental in the reconstruction of Jingoji Temple, renovation of Toji Temple, and revitalization of Kegon Buddhism at Kozanji Temple. Myoe authored many books but is most well-known for his critique Saijyarin (literally, \u201cSmashing a Heterodox Kharma Wheel\u201d; a three-volume book written in 1212), criticizing the exclusive Nembutsu (sutra chanting) practice for salvation advocated by the Priest Honen.    The letter notifies that Myoe is sending Myoshu-Bo, perhaps one of his disciples, as a messenger to bring the gift of a vat full of pickles to the Priest Shinrokuro (details not known). It is addressed to Girin-Bo Kikai (1178-1250), who was Myoe\u2019s senior disciple who was instrumental in the development of Kozanji Temple.
