Sosen (1560-1632) was a tea connoisseur of the early Edo Period. He was the son of Kuwayama Shigeharu and was sometimes called Sadaharu and Shigenaga, but in his later years, he assumed the pseudonym To-un. Sosen was his Buddhist name.Sosen served all of the most powerful warlords of the era, namely Toyotomi Hidenaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and later Tokugawa Ieyasu. He studied chanoyu (sado, tea ceremony) from Sen-no-Doan (1546-1632), the son of Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-91), and though his tea style is not clearly recorded, it is said that he closely followed Rikyu\u2019s style, as conveyed by Sosen\u2019s son, the tea master Do-an. In fact, one famous disciple of the Sosen School was Katagiri Sekishu (1605-73).In this letter, Sosen writes that he has been invited to an evening tea party hosted by Sen-no-Rikyu and asks Ryuzoji Rokuro (?-1603), the addressee, to accompany him. He adds that Rokuro should also invite Hosokawa Sansai (1563-1645) to come along. Ryuzoji Rokuro (Naganobu) was a member of the Ryuzoji family, the rulers of Hizen Province and was the third son of Ryuzoji Kaneiye (1504-45). There is a notation about Rokuro being invited to a tea party hosted by Rikyu and it says that he was invited to an afternoon tea party held on October 25, 1590, and from this, one can assume that Rokuro and Rikyu were close friends through a shared interest in tea.Using the dates of death of people mentioned in this letter, it is possible to conclude that it was written in the winter of 1590.
