Suetsugu (1581-1639) was the second son born to Provisional Major Counselor Kinto (1440-95). In 1626, Suetsugu himself was promoted to Provisional Major Counselor at age 46. The Yotsutsujifamily served at the imperial court as master musicians of the Japanese koto (a large horizontal stringed instrument resembling a zither).In this letter, the writer asks the addressee, Nakanoin Michimura (1588-1653), to look over a poem composed at a poetry party commissioned at the court of Retired Emperor Gomizunoo in January of an unknown year. Suetsugu is embarrassed by the poor quality of his poem and humbly asks Michimura for editorial help. From the style of calligraphy, one can see that this letter was written when Suetsugu was in his 50s.
