tea connoisseur of the early Edo Period, Zeniya Sotoku (?-1683) was the son of the tea merchant Zeniya Sototsu (\uff1f-1590) from Sakai City. Sotoku practiced chanoyu under Sen Sotan (1578-1658) and later used the pseudonyms \u201cJizai-An\u201d and \u201cIppusai.\u201d He cultivated a friendship with Bishop Seigan Soyi (1588-1661) of Daitokuji Temple and is said to have favored teakettles inscribed with Priest Seigan\u2019s words.Several missing characters in this letter make the context hard to understand. The addressee is also unknown, but perhaps he was a close chanoyu friend.
