Moritaka (1583-1629) was the second son of Obama Takakage (years of birth and death unknown), a great navy general. During the Battle of Sekigahara, Moritaka and his older brother Mitsutaka vied against Kuki Yoshitaka (1542-1600) in Anoriura Bay in Ise (today\u2019s Mie Pref.), and successfully took over the warship Nihon-Maru. Later he became Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616)\u2019s vassal, was rewarded a fief in Shirako, in Ise, and assumed active duty as a navy general.This letter is a thank-you letter addressed to an unidentified hoin (honorary title granted to accomplished artists, physicians, poets, etc., in addition to Buddhist priests) for a feast to which Moritaka and his men had been invited. He must have drunk to excess and does not seem quite sober at the time of this writing.
