Soko (1465-1548) was a priest affiliated with the Daitokuji Temple during the Muromachi period. Born in Ohmi (today\u2019s Shiga Prefecture), he went up to Kyoto at the age of 16 to serve at Kenninji. When he was 23, he went to study under the Reverend Shumpo Soki (1416-96) of the Daitokuji. He studied for 20 years under the Reverend Jitsuden Soshin (1434-1507) and later succeeded him, and was appointed the 76th bishop of the Daitokuji in 1509. After his retirement to the Daisen-In, Kogaku Soko became famous for designing its rock garden.Kogaku Soko was widely admired both at the imperial court and the military government. In 1511, Emperor Gokashiwabara (1464-1526) honored him with the title of Busshin-Shoto-Zenji, Emperor Gonara (1496-1557) bestowed on him the honorable title of Shobo-Daijo-Kokushi in 1536. Many of his disciples, one of whom was the famous Dairin Soto (1480-1568), contributed to bringing the Daitokuji Temple to its height of prosperity, where intellectuals and tea aficionados congregated. Kogaku Soko was himself devoted to the chanoyu (the way of tea) and turned his temple into a major center of this classical art.The poetry was likely composed to laud an entitlement when Soko was retired to the Daisen-In.
