The inscribed band of the early mirrors was gradually replaced by a petal-like design, typically made of eight linked petals, on the inner band. As seen here, this later design is aptly described as an \u201cinner flower,\u201d but it is a designation used only in Japan\u2019s artistic circles. In China, this kind of mirror is simply called a mirror with linked-bow design. \u201cMirrors with inner flower designs,\u201d or central linked-bow mirrors, have often been recovered from ancient burial mounds in Japan. The central knob of this kind of mirror is often decorated either with a four-leaf pattern or a deformed four-leaf pattern, which looks like four flying bats. The undecorated spaces around the knob (also called a knot or boss) are often inscribed with auspicious expressions, such as on longevity.
