Shuryo (1501-79) was a priest of the Rinzai sect who originally came from Tamba, lying partly in Hyogo and partly in Kyoto today. He is also known by his pseudonym of Kensai. He started training under Shino Toan of the Rokuonji Temple in Kyoto in 1509 and a few years later entered the priesthood at Tenryuji. Upon command from the military lord Ohuchi Yoshitaka (1507-51), Sakugen Shuryo sailed to Ming China twice as a government emissary and was welcomed by Emperor Zhu Houzong (Shi Zong; Jp. Seiso). After his return to Japan, he lived in the Myochi-In associated with the Tenryuji.  Sakugen Shuryo\u2019s literary gift was obvious in his boyhood, which developed further with discipline from his teacher Toan who was well versed in Confucian philosophy. Sakugen Shuryo composed many poems and was admired as one of the Gozan literary scholars of the Five Great Mountains.The single-line poem calligraphed here was originally found in Du Shaoling Poetry Collection of Du Fu (712-770), exalted as China\u2019s \u2018poet historian\u2019 or \u2018poet saint\u2019. (Du Shaoling is Du Fu\u2019s pseudonym.)
