Although not indigenous to China, ancient chronicles such as Ce Fu Yuan Gui describe that the lion as being brought into China as a precious gift for the emperor from various western domains. The popularity of the lion pattern speaks of the cosmopolitan nature of Tang Dynasty China. (Ce Fu Yuan Gui, lit. \u201cLibrary of the Big Turtle,\u201d was compiled around 1013 by Wang Qinruo and others, upon imperial edict of the North Sung Dynasty.
