Roben (689-773) was a high-ranking priest of the Nara Period and is considered the originator of the Kegon Sect. Legend has it that as a baby, he was picked up by an eagle and left at the top of a cedar tree, and his life was saved by Priest Gien of Okadera Temple. This episode was later adapted into a kabuki script (“Tale of Roben Cedar”). During the reign of Emperor Shomu (701-756), he headed the Kegon (Ch. Huanyan) Sect academicians, who were devoted to the Avatamsaka Sutra (called the Kegonkyo, or Kegon Sutra, in Japan), while also contributing greatly to the construction of Todaiji Temple as a service to the emperor. The one-volume Sutra of the Grace of the Boundless Heaven describes the grace and benevolence that devoted practitioners of the Buddhist faith are to enjoy. This segment has the following credit written in its postscript: “Archbishop Roben’s dedication of a thousand sutra scrolls”. As Priest Roben was appointed archbishop in 763 at age 75, the 1000 scrolls were written by him, upon his own initiative, between this time and his death in 773 at age 85. It is likely that the many calligraphers working at the Todaiji Temple Bureau of Sutra Transcription aided in the task.
