These kinds of illustrated stories constituted the largest genre out of all picture scrolls, and they were produced in large quantities by temples and shrines to authenticate themselves and propagate their sectarian faith. The Hasedera Temple Picture Scroll depicts the birth of the temple\u2019s founder, Tokudo (656-?), his taking up of the Buddhist vow and the establishment of the temple by decree of Emperor Shomu in 727. The Eleven-Faced Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) was the central object of worship.Eight versions of Hasedera Temple Picture Scrolls created during the Muromachi Period (a complete set contains three scrolls) exist today, out of which the scrolls in the former private collection of Hayashi Heizo were the most famous. This version is now exhibited at the Idemitsu Art Museum.
