Koyi (years of birth and death unknown) was a Buddhist priest serving at the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine during the early Edo Period. His name derives from the \u201cHodobo,\u201d the name of the residence for priests erected in the Buddhist temple sanctuary. He studied India-ink writing and painting under Shokado Shojo (1584-1639) and was later admired as one of the high-ranking disciples. His classmates included Takimotobo Jojun (years of birth and death unknown), Nakamura Kyuetsu (1590-1677), Hozobo Shinkai (1635?-1688) and Fujita Yukan (years of birth and death unknown), among whom Koyi and Shinkai were most prominent. His brushworks are reproduced in Shokado School calligraphy exemplars. The exhibited handscroll shows torinoko paper with fabric patterns, which is then decorated with extremely fine, sand-like silver and gold foils to depict the mist, while flowers and grass are painted with gold mud to a luxury finish. The brushwork is simply a list of the names of different provinces, official posts and other proper nouns. While popular calligraphy textbooks, or exemplars, used letters and poetry quotations, a simple list of place names may also have been useful for beginners. The writer\u2019s note states that this piece showing the typical Shokado School features was completed in September 1649.
