Fujimoto Tesseki (1816-1863) was a samurai warrior of the late Edo Period belonging to the radical “Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians” faction. Originally, he had a post in Okayama Province, but then he defected (1840) and went to ] Osaka and Kyoto. Thereafter, he traveled across Japan, building ties with other political activists calling for the restoration of the imperial order. In 1863, Tesseki organized the Tenchu Gumi (lit. group for heaven’s punishments) with other radicals such as Yoshimura Torataro (1837-1863) and Matsumoto Keido (1832-1863). Their insurgencies in various parts of the country were eventually quelled, and many members were killed as they ran away from losing battles. Tesseki fled to Yoshino (Nara Pref.) but was killed in action at age 48.Tesseki showed talent in Chinese and Japanese poetry and brush-and-ink writing and painting. The exhibit shows Tesseki’s own waka, written with his unique flowing style, mixing Chinese characters and the Manyo-style phonetic syllabary (Manyo-gana) is one of Tesseki’s rare extant works.<\/p>\r\n"},{"number":1,"jp":"
